A Mental Wilderness Survival Kit
A survival kit should be carried by anyone who goes deep into the wilderness. What should be in it? Matches, a blade of some sort, and first aid supplies are among the usual recommendations. When you read the true stories of survival, though, you start to see that it is what s in a persons head that often determines if they survive or not. What, then, should be in this mental survival kit? A Survival Kit In Your Mind 1. Willingness to learn. Even those who know nothing about survival until lost in the wilderness can still learn as they go - if they are willing to. If you re cold, watch that squirrel dive under a pile of leaves, and try that to stay warm (it works). Notice what s working and what isn t, and keep trying new things. 2. Willingness to do what s necessary. This is one of the most important items in your mental survival kit. Hey, they can eat hissing cockroaches just for the chance to win some money on Fear Factor, so you can do it to save your life, right? Spoon with your buddy to stay warm, break open logs to find grubs to eat - do whatever it takes. 3. Positive attitude. This is an essential. In many stories of survival it is clear that those who expected to survive did. Even if you re not sure you can survive, encourage this attitude by acting as if you expect to. 4. Inspirational thoughts. This is how to have that positive attitude. An easy and enjoyable way to get this inspiration is to read true stories of wilderness survival. Some of the stories are about situations far worse than anything you are ever likely to encounter. Remembering them at the appropriate time is a sure way to see that you can survive. tell them to others too, if you are in a group. 5. Wilderness survival knowledge. You don t have to go to a survival training school to read and remember that you can safely eat all North American mammals, or that you can stuff your jacket with cattail fluff to create a winter coat. Any little bit helps, so learn a new trick or two each season, or take an edible plant guide on your next hike. 6. Reasons to survive. We all have reasons to want to live, but we need to remember to pull out those reasons when the time comes. Many people have attributed their survival to the constant thought of a loved one waiting for them, or something they want in the future. Maybe you ve already done this mental preparation, but it can t hurt to look over the list above again. Is there anything you need to work on in your mental survival kit? The Pursuit of Happiness - What is the Meaning of the Fruits of True Happiness?
The Pursuit of Happiness - What is the Meaning of the Fruits of True Happiness? True happiness is said to be both an inner glow and an outer radiation that you can feel together with an total satisfaction. Dictionaries will give you the meaning of happiness as an emotional feeling which parallels with pleasure, joy, and contentment. But then these things are just temporary. In your pursuit for happiness you have to dig deeper into the real meaning of happiness, a happiness that is true and never ending. True happiness is a great feeling of satisfaction which is incomparable to the instant pleasures you get when you see your favourite soccer team winning. It is felt when you overcome an obstacle which has been presented to you. There are many people out there who do not know much about true happiness. This is the reason I have compiled this article on happiness, to let you learn how to find happiness and be happy. What really makes you happy? Is it the material things such as money, clothes, jewellery, brand name footwear and bags? Do you go for long-term states of happiness such as security, good health, and love? Which is most valuable to you? Have you gotten access to true happiness? When was the last time you felt really happy? Does happiness quotes and happiness poems make you fell good inside and out? Have you given your all to a certain challenge and you felt satisfied with all those efforts you have placed? Recognizing true happiness is a must. There are several occurrences when you have been misguided to the real deal in your pursuit to happiness and simple pleasure. To mark a definition between the two, it is vital that you know the exact difference that comes with both terms. Simple pleasure is a thing of feeling terrific about something. Examples of pleasurable experiences are a family cruise vacation, a spa treatment during the weekend, a great basketball game, and so on. Meanwhile, true happiness is far from feeling emotionally happy. It goes more way beyond enjoyment. In True happiness lies contentment and engrossment. So what is it that let people have true happiness? Researchers have identified several factors that can fully describe true happiness in a person. They say that people from all walks of life find happiness but are just too busy to pay any attention to it simply because they fail to recognize what true happiness and pleasure are. True happiness in a person is actually a state where in you feel like going along with the flow. You seem to be going along with the flow that sets off smoothly, hassle free, and effortlessly. It can be compared to an experience wherein the ticking of the clock stops suddenly and you become totally oblivious of the things that surrounds you. Among the significant clues of happiness are being totally immersed with what you are doing, when you have your full participation on an engagement, when you are enjoying to the extreme but you have certainly have no idea with regards to the day, to the passing time, to the other things taking place in your surroundings, and the genuine satisfaction that you feel. These are the instances that can inform you that you have got nothing but true happiness in your mind, heart, and soul. There is chance of true happiness for every person. Do not be taken aback by the negativity that happiness is only meant for other people. In your pursuit for happiness, just remember that you also deserve to experience and find happiness. When it comes your way, you can attest to how lucky you are as a person. Therefore, take time to reconcile occurrences and things in your life. Give importance to the value of true happiness everyday. Do not worry, be happy - famous happiness quote. Andrew Chin is a recognized authority on the subject of Happiness . Your Caravan Layout and Fixtures
The interior caravan layout and fixtures is important. There are a number of things to consider. One is the size of the bed. Double beds in caravans are often smaller than the normal one at home. Sometimes caravan beds are shaped with rounded corners, which means it is extremely difficult to use a fitted sheet. Similar problems can occur with beds in motorhomes. In campervans, beds can be even bigger than king-size so, again, sheets may be a problem. The choice of single beds versus double beds is personal and is entirely depended on what sleeping arrangements you prefer. Think also about whether you want a fold-up bed, so you can enjoy extra space during the day, and where you want the bed positioned: some travellers prefer an island bed, others are happy for it to be flush against the caravan side. Make sure the caravan layout you choose has good usable storage space both inside and outside. The wardrobe should have sufficient hanging capacity. Most caravans have side door entry just some also have rear door entry. If you go for a rear door, make sure the dust sealing and scupper vent in the roof to pressurise the van is in excellent working order for minimising dust. Many caravan layouts have built in showers, toilets and hot-water services, but if you are planning on spending most of your nights in caravan parks, you may be paying for unnecessary caravan fixtures. Showers and toilets obviously require regular cleaning and take up valuable space. They usually come as a unit, with the toilet built into the shower cubicle. Larger motorhomes may have separate toilets. A microwave oven is probably an essential feature and if your caravan is not fitted with one, seriously consider adding one â" you will use it all the time. Air-conditioning is more a matter of personal choice but it can get extremely hot in the north of Australia and if you intend heading north you will need one. Air-conditioning units are readily available. Many new caravans are built to order, which means you have the option of customising your caravan layout and fixtures to suit your own taste. TIP Take a tape measure with you when you go looking at caravans and motorhomes. Then you can work out what fits where. Even if you are of average height you will want to check the headroom as well. If you are taller, this may take on even more significance â" you do not want to be hitting your head all the time just because you forget to check this basic caravan layout initially. Mt Huangshan in Winter
The old Chinese saying Mt. Huangshan is beautiful in the all year round, but its scene in winter is more attractively is a perfect description of snowy Mt. Huangshan. Travel in winter you will be pleasantly surprised and have some unlooked-for experience: Snow Snow is an eternal theme of Mt.Huangshan in winter because all the beauty spots take a dramatic change. During this time, the peaks, the mountains, the wonder stones, the trees and the wines all dress in white. Appreciating the ice sculptures, you will find that you are traveling in a silver fairyland and astonished at the marvel of nature. You will be intoxicated and fascinated in such a picturesque landscape that you will forget to return to the hotel. Rime Rime is one of the famous wonders in winter. It looks not so like snow, and not so like frost but is more beautiful and vagarious than snow or frost. When fog or drizzle comes to it in the sub-zero weather, the trees, the rocks, peaks will be covered with the rime, and you may find yourself in a crystal and shiny wonderland with clusters of frosty corals suffused with a plentiful supply of fresh air. Sea of Clouds Winter is the best season to appreciate the sea of clouds. Because during this time, temperature of the lower atmosphere and the condensation level of the stratocumulus is relatively low (approximately 800-1,200 meters), the cold air frequently appears. After snow or rain, boundless sea of clouds often can be viewed. And please bear in mind that the tremendous spectacle of sunrise from the sea of clouds is an unusual sight, it is a must-see. Sunrise In winter you can have more opportunities to see spectacular sunrise than in the other season as the clouds in this season are lower and rain is a rarity in Mt.Huangshan. Sounds of nature Mt.Huangshan is a good place to listen to the sounds of nature in winter. The murmur of springs in the thunder of the cascades, the soughing of the wind in the pines, the chord of the sea of the clouds, and the voice of the broken ice are known as the five sounds of it. They can be heard in the proper places in this mountain. But the last one only heard at midday in winter, when the sunlight melting the ice, the valleys often echo with the clear and ringing voices of the broken ice off and on. It is such a mysterious sound that you will immerse in the fantastic imagination! Animals The thick forest and the gullies near the Pine Valley Nunnery are the paradise of the animals. In winter, you can meet birds, elks, deer, monkeys, foxes...crowded here to find food. Winter there is an ideal photographic studio for the Shutterbugs and the exploring world which has been yearned for by the animal fans. Tips: 1. Winter is the most economical time for visiting there as the prices for hotels and the entry fee are lowered by 15% to 40% compared to those of the peak seasons, however, Chinese spring festival(commonly last for 7 days) is an exception, during which the price is the same as normal seasons. 2. The hotels are centrally heated so you don t have to worry about the cold. 3. Winter usually comes in late October in Mt. Huangshan. The mountain often snows from November to the next March. But December to the next February is the best time to enjoy snow. Exceptionally, if you are lucky, you may the one who first see snow or rimes in late October. 4. Antiskid shoes are provided as well as heavy coats in most hotels. 5. Take your down-jacket and wool or fible-pile ski-style cap or balaclava for warmth. 6. Put your travel shoes on, better cover straw sandals on them, and stick and gloves are necessary. 7. Use the cable car to get you up the mountain in Cloud Valley Temple rather than spending lots of time ascending on foot if you feel run down. The car is comfortable and safe at anytime you need not worry about that. 8. Take your camera, if you don t you will regret that. Sierra City Gold Prospecting Trip in California s Mother Lode
Sierra City Gold Prospecting Trip in California s Mother Lode Every year for the past several years I have taken a vacation and prospecting trip to the little town of Sierra City, high in the Sierra Nevada range of California to prospect for gold on a friend s mining claim. Sierra City is a historic gold rush town of a little more than 200 persons. Known mostly for its rich lode mines, it also had some rich placers as well. Its now a center for various recreational activities including prospecting, fishing, etc. The North Fork of the Yuba River flows through the town and is a well known gold bearing river and has been heavily dredged, especially in the area both above and below the town of Downieville. It runs for miles through the Sierra Nevada range. Where I am working it has been little worked in the last 10 years as the claim is pretty much surrounded by private property, and permission to trespass is required. The spot where I prospect is actually a well known local swimming hole for the kids - but there are nice nuggets in the bedrock and among the boulders in the background. The whole of Sierra County is an area known for large, coarse gold nuggets. The geology in much of the county is very favorable for the formation of large gold. Historically, more large nuggets have been found in Sierra County that any other county in California, and the region in and around the North Fork has produced most of those finds. During the gold rush, miners found a 25 pound nugget in the North fork of the Yuba river between Sierra City and Downieville. An 11 pounder was also found at the Jersey diggings on the hill just above Downieville. Many of the side streams that dump into North fork of the Yuba have yielded dozens of large nuggets and quartz/gold specimens containing between 50 and 150 ounces of gold. There is even an unsubstantiated tale of a heart shaped nugget from one of these side streams that contained over 1800 ounces of gold. Most of the really large nuggets were found in the early days when thousands of miners scoured the hills, but even in todayâ™s era of smaller scale operations and weekend prospectors, rich pockets of crystalline gold and multi-ounce nuggets continue to be found from time to time. As an example, some friends of mine found a 7.5 ounce nugget while dredging in September 2004. Sierra county is also famous for the 16 to 1 mine hard rock mine whose deep workings continue to yield rich pockets of gold in quartz. During the summer of 2004, the mine yielded a single pocket containing almost a million dollars worth of gold. As at the 16 to 1, important and large finds continue to be made periodically in Sierra County. Sierra City, California is located around 1:45 minutes from my home in Reno. This year I moved my trailer into the local campground for an entire month, from mid-July to Mid-August. I wasn t there the entire time, but I would come up for long weekends, and then go home to work. While the deserts are roasting, Sierra City is at 4200 feet and the weather this time of year is usually great with highs in the low 90s and lows in the low 50s. The water temps runs around 65, which is cool but still pleasant - it feels very nice to be prospecting in the water that time of year. I spend most of my prospecting time dredging. In many ways, small scale suction dredging was born on the North fork of the Yuba, as many of the early dredging pioneers like Ernie Keene tested their home made machines out here, sometimes with amazing success. Over the years, I ve made a number of friends at the campground there and many show up year after year, just like I do. There are detecting opportunities, high banking, sniping, lode gold prospecting and plenty of other things for the prospector to do. I always wish I had more time when my season ends and I have to come home. Its a great place to visit and those who discover this hidden gem of the Sierra range are usually very happy they did. Yellowstone Area: The Best Family Vacation!
Yellowstone National Park is the home of so many natural wonders and wildlife. Practically everyone has heard of Old Faithful , the most famous geyser in the world. There are actually thousands of geysers, paint pots and other thermal attractions. Spending time in Yellowstone National Park is one of the best vacations you could take. Old Faithful is great; it seems to be synonymous with Yellowstone. But there s more! While youâ™re there, plan to visit some of the most beautiful, out of the way places just outside the Park as well as inside the park. Most of these spots are within an hourâ™s drive from the park. They are also much less crowded! This could be the beginning of your perfect family vacation getaway! The Yellowstone area is very popular during the summer months, but don t let that stop you from visiting in the winter. There are great winter activities in the area including snow skiing at Jackson Hole and Big Sky; snowmobiling in the snowmobile capital of the world, Island Park and West Yellowstone; cross country skiing throughout the area; and many other winter activities. The Yellowstone area that I refer to includes Grand Teton National Park directly to the South; Jackson Hole, Wyoming, even further south than Grand Teton Park; West Yellowstone, Island Park and Henry s Lake, directly west of the park in Idaho; and the Montana area just to the North. So what is our favorite sight/activity? Perhaps itâ™s Big Spring , where a whole river comes up out of the ground. Or Sawtelle Peak and Rendevous Mountain at 10,000 feet, where you can see for miles and miles. Maybe itâ™s the fantastic view of the Tetons as seen from Grand Teton National Park. It could be the Bar J Wranglers dinner and show near Jackson Hole, or the entertainment at the Playmill Theatre in West Yellowstone. What is your idea of a good camping experience? Is it in a sleeping bag under the stars? Or is a 5 star hotel more your style? Perhaps itâ™s gourmet meals or pan fried trout over a campfire? Do you like to hike and bike into the secluded backwoods? The Yellowstone area is for you. Do you like to stay close to the main roads, yet still see panoramic vistas and unparalleled views? The Yellowstone area is for you. We live about 3 hours from West Yellowstone. I have been to the Yellowstone area dozens of times with my family. The Turner family had already been going to Henryâ™s Lake long before I was born (not all that long ago! Really!). It has been a yearly tradition since the â˜50â™s. I would recommend the Yellowstone area because there is something for everyone. The sight-seer, the hiker, the biker, the rafter, the canoer, the camper, the young and the old. Don t put it off any longer; visit Yellowstone and make some memories. Roger Turner is the webmaster of Yellowstone Area Guide. Dig Your Own Garnets at The Garnet Hill Recreation Area
Near Ely, Nevada is a special area the Government has set aside for rock hounds to hunt garnets. There is no charge and the area is open to the public. The Garnet Hill rock hound recreation area in White Pine County is located about 4 miles Northwest of Central Ely in the Eagan mountain range. The major access road to this area joins US Highway 50 about 6.4 miles West of the traffic signal at US 395 and US 50 junction in Ely. The area is locally referred to as Garnet Hill and this nationally known rock hounding area is famous for its very dark colored garnets found in a flow banded rhyolitic volcanic rock. Two square miles of public land was designated as a public recreation area in 1970 to ensure continued public access to the site because of its recreational and scientific study values. There is some limited camping space for tents and small RVs at the site - three tables are located around the road loop near the top of Garnet Hill. Other camping opportunities are located in and around Ely. The Garnet Hill road loop is about 3.1 miles East of US 50 and access is provided on a winding and somewhat steep but graded road. The Garnet Hill road is a maintained dirt road, and is suitable for use by sedans and other standard passenger vehicles. From Garnet Hill one also has a fine view of the open pit copper mine in the multicolored waste rock dumps at the nearby Robinson copper mining district. The Garnet usually occurs as single crystals attached within small cavities known as vugs. The Garnet bearing vugs seem to occur in specific mineralized zones and areas, and these are confined to certain areas and not randomly dispersed and even manner through the rhyolitic rock. When searching for a zones which will contain the Garnet crystals, perhaps the best clue is the presence of veins are cavities which are lined with sugary, sparkling light gray tridymite, a high temperature version of Quartz. Collectors have worked at this spot for many decades, and broken waste material and rubble completely covers the ground in some areas, burying any potential Garnet bearing host rocks. Often, unless one works within the established pits, a considerable amount of work to move this rock rubble will be required. Most rock hounds conduct their search for garnets at this location in one of two different ways. The first method involves visually searching the surface and nearby drainages for the dark colored stones that have weathered from the pink to gray colored rhyolitic rock. Small garnets which have come loose from the host rock are spread here and there around parts of the area and their very dark color contrasts strongly with the local rock and soil. Using this visual hunting method usually does find some stones, and the finds come with the least amount of work involved. The garnets collect in small gullies and drainage areas because they are heavier than the surrounding rock in a manner much like a placer gold deposit. The second method is used by other, more energetic rock hounds, who will work to break open the Garnet bearing rock with hammers and chisels. These tough workers seek to break open the hard rock and reveal any gems hidden within. This is a popular method and is actually the best one for locating the finest specimens of Garnet, where the stones are still attached to the mother rock. If one seeks to use this method, it is necessary to bring sharp chisels and heavy crack hammers to break open the hard unweathered rhyolite stone. It is also very hard work. When I dug here, I felt the distinct flavor of what it must have been like to break rock in the old time prisons. The historic old copper mining community of Ely is located a few miles south east of Garnet Hill and for those visiting the area, Ely is the chief source of supplies and goods. Ely is the county seat for White Pine County, and most normal shopping and other supplies can be found there. The Ely area offers a number of attractions, including an interesting train ride from town down to the local copper mining area at Ruth. Great Basin National Park, which includes the fascinating Lehman caves, is only a short drive away.
